Research Goals

The Principal and Co-Investigators for a number of NASA satellite experiments are on the CAS faculty and are engaged in a multitude of research topics associated with their experiments. The satellite experiments are SAM II, SAGE, SAGE II, SAGE III, LITE, LIMS, HALOE, SABER, CALIPSO and AIM. HALOE, SAGE II, SAGE III and SABER are presently in orbit providing critical data on Earth’s atmospheric parameters including, for example, ozone, water vapor, aerosols and the solar energy input. The SAGE III instrument was launched December 10, 2001 aboard the Russian METEOR 3M spacecraft, while SABER was launched on December 7, 2001 aboard the TIMED spacecraft. CALIPSO will be launched in 2005 to become the first free-flying laser radar experiment (lidar) in space and will provide crucial global data on atmospheric clouds and aerosols needed for climate studies. AIM will be launched in 2006 to provide important data on polar mesospheric clouds. All experiments flown to date have yielded key atmospheric and solar data, which have been used to help understand the Earth’s climate, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics.

CAS Graduate Student works on CAS Lidar.
